The declared aim of the Archives is to publish the results of its work in the field of science and public culture in an accessible form, and make them known to as many people and as wide an audience as possible. The process of opening up the world of archives, which has been ongoing for many years, can be given a new impetus here in Veszprém during the implementation of the European Capital of Culture 2023 projects. For the Archives, participation in ECoC means that we can address and attract new social groups to the world of archives, either through physical or digital presence. The Archives will thus provide the knowledge base of the historical records it holds and, through our archival staff, the expertise needed to process that knowledge base for ECoC.
Projects supported by the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 ECoC programme:
Institutional visitor-friendly development - English language website development
An English-language version of the Veszprém County Archives subpage of the National Archives of Hungary collection portal is being developed to provide information about our institution to international visitors.
Veszprém Map Wanderer – local history database and map
Using digital tools for modelling the historical development of the city of Veszprém along the coordinates of time and space, the new archival database aims to open up a fascinating window on the past.
Building on the street and house structure of the historical core of the city of Veszprém between 1850 and 1950, the Veszprém Map Wanderer will become a local history database that displays the most important past data of streets, houses and their inhabitants on digitised, interactive, multi-layered historical maps.
Treasure Hunter – archival education programme
In connection with the Gizella Days of Veszprém in 2023, the Archives is planning an archival-educational programme called Treasure Hunter, which will provide young people with an innovative and interactive way to learn about the history of Veszprém.
Deep Drilling – local history writing workshop
The Archives will organise workshops on local history methodology in 2023. The first of the two events will focus on urban historiography. The second will cover village history. Workshop participants will be presented with archival sources on the history of Veszprém and the villages of the ECoC region and will be invited to interpret these together.
