Good to know:

•    In Hungary, strict laws govern the research of civil registry records and access to personal data.

•    Civil registration began in Hungary on October 1, 1895. 

•    Even during periods when records are freely accessible, the contents of duplicate civil registry records held in the collection of the Hungarian National Archives can only be accessed through in-person research. 

•   Archives may not release civil registry data in any other manner (e.g., by mail). 

•    No copies may be made of civil registry data held in archives.

•    Civil registry data prior to October 1, 1895, were recorded in church registers (Catholic, Reformed, Lutheran, and Jewish).
